Week-end Video -- A Teapartier Explains It All To You

Calling all Americans. If this video doesn't convince you to get out and vote Democratic this Tuesday, nothing will. Please Please all you dis-affected dems, undecideds, and sick of it all voters-- don't stay home. Get out and vote, early, absentee or on election day. Just do it..

The Tea Party is sounding more " Alice in Wonderland" every day. We cannot let them get power or the inmates really will be running the asylum.

When that happens we will all be in padded cells-- or worse.

Quantitative Easing and the Potential, Adverse Redirection of Money from the Bubbling Bond Market

Yesterday I mentioned that I read a book a few years ago called the Dying of Money by Jens O. Parsson. I mentioned Parsson’s case study of Weimar Germany’s hyperinflation and related that to some noticeable similarities that exist between Weimar Germany and the U.S. currently. Today I want to discuss a couple of important things that Parsson observed and relate that to Quantitative Easing 2.0 (QE2) which should be announced next Wednesday.

Parsson wrote about how there are several markets within a country’s economy. For instance, there’s a separate market for goods and services and a separate market for assets. Within these separate markets there are even smaller, distinct markets. For instance, within the goods market you may have a separate market for refrigerators or cars. Each of these markets and sub-markets are subject to the laws of supply and demand.

  • Given a fixed level of supply, the more demand there is for an item the higher the price will be for the item and vice versa.
  • Given a fixed level of demand, the less supply there is for an item the higher the price will be for the item and vice versa.

The quantity of money available (per unit of time) has the ability to impact the demand side of the picture of a particular marketplace by impacting how fast people who hold the money make it available to purchase items in the marketplace. In other words, the quantity of money available (per unit of time) has the ability to impact people’s willingness/reluctance to pay a certain price for items in the marketplace.

  • For instance, the average purchaser may have $10 to pay for a seller’s item. The seller recognizes that the average purchaser is willing to pay up to $10 so they’ll price their item at $10. However, if the quantity of money available to the average purchaser increases to $15 their reluctance to pay $10 over time is likely going to decrease; leading to more purchases of the item. The seller will eventually sense purchasers’ willingness to pay more for their item and will adjust their prices higher accordingly to adjust to the new demand picture.
  • Thus, increasing the quantity of money/money supply in a marketplace has the ability to lead to higher prices in the marketplace.

Parrson observed that the debt market and the stock market are relief valves of inflation. The money that enters into these markets helps to keep the money from impacting the goods market where it can drive good prices higher. In addition, this money is perceived as being “beneficial” for people who hold stocks and bonds because it helps drive asset prices.

  • This is an important observation that Parrson made because if money were suddenly redirected from the stock market and/or bond market to the goods market as a result of increased inflation/inflationary expectations (money is more likely to be redirected from the bond market under this scenario since certain stocks can be an inflation hedge) the price for stocks and/or bonds could drop and price increases for goods could be further exasperated.

Currently, the yields on U.S. government debt and some corporate debt are unprecedentedly low-so low that people are hardly being compensated for loaning money out for long periods of time (for instance, right now you’ll only get 2.62% for loaning the U.S. government money for 10 years). The unprecedented low interest rates are largely a result of the Federal Reserve’s own actions to keep interest rates historically low and major debt demand from those who are concerned about deflation, concerned about the direction of the economy, those who are trying to manage the value of their currency (foreign central banks like China), those who want a “safe” place to store their money, and those who are trying to profit from the Federal Reserve’s plans to buy up debt through quantitative easing.

  • The unprecedented low interest rates for debt are important to mention because it is a sign that A LOT of money in the U.S. economy is located in the debt market, the relief valve of inflation. This large amount of money is not a problem at this moment because it is being kept away from causing prices to rise in the goods market, the market where price increases adversely impact ordinary people.

However, a few days ago America’s and perhaps the world’s most preeminent bond investor Bill Gross lamented about how Quantitative Easing 2.0 could spell the end of a 30 year bull market in bonds. Gross suggested that there is not a lot of money left to be made in bonds and insinuated that QE2 could eventually lead to the slaughter of bond investors with its potential inflationary consequences.

  • If Gross and others’ fears about QE2 prove correct it could be the catalyst that causes much of the money contained in the bond market to move to other markets within the economy. If QE2 is as inflationary as some people fear this money could be redirected to asset classes that help people protect from or benefit from inflation. The asset class that investors usually turn to when inflation is rearing its ugly head or when inflation expectations begin to rise is commodities. If investors redirect money from the bond market to the commodity market the result could be bad for ordinary people since this redirected money would force commodity prices higher (by increasing people's willingness to pay for them). Commodities are key inputs for all sorts of items that ordinary people buy like food and energy, so higher commodity prices could potentially lead to higher prices that consumers have to pay for the items they need. If this scenario plays out the potential exists for there to eventually be inflation that may become difficult to control.
  • Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank president Thomas Hoenig aptly described QE2 as “bargaining with the devil”. QE2 may stimulate the economy but could easily have side effects that are extremely harmful in the long-run.

I caution you that there are a lot of “ifs” in the above scenario. I could be completely wrong about what is going to happen as a result of QE2 in the long-run. In addition, even if I am right about the long-term adverse consequences of quantitative easing, I could completely mistime when the adverse consequences take place (for instance, the actual damage may not take place until after there's a major downturn in the U.S./global economy (a major downturn is still a real serious possibility) or if/when Fed launches QE3 or QE4). The Federal Reserve and other central banks have pulled rabbits out of their hats several times before so it’s possible that they may pull a “miracle” again. However, at some point policymakers’ luck has to run out because they are fallible like the rest of us.

Right Wing Violence Gets More and More Scary

There is an undercurrent of violence on the far right that has a Nazi storm trooper quality to it that is more than a bit unsettling. This was brought home rather forcefully earlier this week when Move On activist, Lauren Valle, was kicked to the ground and stomped on by Rand Paul supporters at a rally in Kentucky.

One of my favorite blogs(and one I recommend following for cogent comment on the American political scene) The Fifth Column , had an excellent post today detailing the string of  attacks targeting liberals and progressives. Hop on over and have a look. It's a little chilling.

All I can add is the video below.  Ms Valle suffered a concussion and shoulder injuries and was briefly hospitalized. She maintains it was a set up.  Her attacker claims she owes him an apology.

In the interest of fairness, I've included a  second video with commentary from the right wing perspective. What do you think?  Personally,I'm waiting for the torchlight parades and Krystalnacht

Here's the way the Rand Paul folks see it - draw your own conclusions.

The Dying of Money and Quantitative Easing 2.0 (QE2)

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to borrow an original copy of Jens O. Parsson’s book Dying of Money: Lessons of the Great German and American Inflations from a local university library a few years ago during my summer vacation (the book is out of print today and usually sells for several hundreds of dollars at used book stores that have a copy). Parsson’s book essentially used Weimar Germany’s devastating hyperinflation in the early 1920s as a case study to analyze how paper money loses its value. It’s a must read book if you can get your hands on a copy…

I took copious notes when I read Parsson’s book because the feeling I had at the time was that the United States and perhaps the globe could eventually face a Weimar-style hyperinflation. Fortunately, I have my notes transcribed on my computer so I can easily reference them anytime I want to. After reviewing my notes last night and thinking about Quantitative Easing 2.0 (QE2) a few things have crossed my mind. I’ll share my thoughts with you in this blog post…

After World War 1 many of the world’s major economies experienced major inflation. Most countries stemmed the inflation by stop printing money, stop spending money that they did not have, and by accepting the subsequent recession that resulted from fighting inflation. The exception to this was Weimar Germany because it continued to spend money that it did not have and its central bank insisted on constant money printing; not allowing for the country to experience a recession like the rest of the world experienced. If the German economy experienced any signs of weakness the German central bank would quickly increase its money printing efforts to restore the economic boom.

  • Parsson wrote about how some countries envied Weimar Germany’s economic resilience-not realizing that Weimar Germany was going to soon pay a severe price for its continuing its economic boom.

Parsson wrote about how spending, profit, speculation, riches, and poverty were in all excess as the inflation in the German economy bubbled up from all the money printing. Meanwhile, German speculators and foreigners had complete faith in the German Mark because they naively believed that an economy like Germany could not fail. Unsurprisingly, Weimar Germany ran major trade deficits as foreigners gladly sent Germans their goods in exchange for inflated Marks.

Eventually German investors and foreign investors realized that the Mark was backed by essentially nothing. This was a major turning point because investors then sought to rid themselves of their Marks as quickly as possible. Foreigners sought to buy up anything that had any real value from Weimar Germany before the Mark became more debased. The money returning from overseas caused domestic prices to rise further as money returned to the domestic German economy to chase a limited supply of German goods and assets.

The German government tried all sorts of wage, price, and exchange controls to stop prices from rising further. The German government also labeled anyone who tried to protect their purchasing power by ridding themselves of their Marks as “traitors”. However, all these measures were ineffective because Germany continued to print money. Eventually, ordinary citizens lost faith in the German government’s ability to stop inflation.

  • The Weimar constitution restrained the German government from making difficult decisions that would stop the problem because those in the German government were so concerned about losing votes...

Ordinary Germans eventually took similar actions as investors by ridding themselves of their Marks as quickly as possible when they lost faith in the German government and in the Mark. This phenomenon of people bidding up the value of assets and goods and the continuous flow of new money into the German economy caused prices to skyrocket out of control. The process literally fed upon itself as people tried to spend their money before prices increased even further and the German government tried to print more money to compensate for the rapidly decreasing purchasing power of its tax revenue.

The end result was a devastating hyperinflation that left virtually every German middle class saver impoverished. Parsson wrote about how many elderly people had to spend the rest of their lives going back to work and about how doctors and university professors were broke. The hyperinflation did not end until the German government stopped printing money.

U.S. policymakers remind me of the policymakers in Weimar Germany prior to its hyperinflation. Like Weimar German officials, U.S. policymakers believe that recessions are something that must be prevented at all cost. They believe that it is the government’s and/or the central bank’s responsibility to intervene with stimulus/money printing to boost economic growth back to “normal” as soon as they detect a sign of economic weakness (recessions are a plague… there must only be economic growth and economic booms in U.S. policymaker’s eyes). In addition, like the Weimar government, the U.S. government does not have the courage to make difficult decisions because decision makers are afraid to negatively impact the voters who they depend on to maintain their power. Rarely does a person hear a U.S. politician vow to reduce spending and to reduce entitlements during an election campaign.

I focus on QE2 a lot in my latest news headlines and commentary section of my blog because it represents another major attempt by the Federal Reserve to prevent an economic downturn at all costs. Many people question the wisdom of engaging in a new round of money printing because commodity prices have already risen significantly in recent months. Some fear that the new money created from QE2 could trigger an inflation that is difficult to control in the long-run (we may not see so much in the short-term because there is some expectation among some investors that the stock market may drop following the announcement of QE2). If inflation becomes difficult to control we have the potential of repeating the kind of hyperinflation seen in Weimar Germany.

I'm not sure if Parsson is still alive, but I’m sure he would admit that there are some differences between the U.S. today and Weimar Germany. One thing that is different is that the U.S. economy is far more complex today than Weimar Germany’s economy ever was. Another difference is the U.S. is probably less prone to seeing a run on its currency than Weimar Germany because the global economy is far more interconnected than it was in the 1920s.

  • Instead of allowing the U.S. dollar to collapse on its own, foreign central banks and governments may try to keep the U.S. dollar going so they can keep their massive dollar holdings from becoming “worthless” and to stave off the negative effects that would come with the sudden collapse of the world’s reserve currency (the U.S. dollar).

Nevertheless, if the Federal Reserve continues its money printing ways the end result inevitably will be the dying of money because ordinary people will eventually figure out their money is really backed by nothing. Once ordinary people figure this out the Federal Reserve and the U.S. government may be powerless to halt the resulting frenzy...

Two Key Financial/Economic Articles from Today

One week from today the Federal Reserve is very likely going to announce the start of a new round of money printing known as Quantitative Easing 2.0. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of quantitative easing, the process involves the Federal Reserve crediting itself money (“printing money”) and then using that money to buy up financial assets, including debt. The Fed’s goal with quantitative easing is to increase inflation/inflation expectations to overcome what it perceives to be a deflationary mindset in the mind of companies and consumers. The Fed is attempting to justify this new round of money printing by claiming that inflation is too low and that action is needed to improve the employment situation in the U.S.

The Wall Street Journal had an excellent article today describing the context that the Federal Reserve finds itself in as it prepares to embark on a new round of money printing and how there is doubt that a new round of money printing is the right move. Link

Even though the Wall Street Journal article was great, the article of the day is a commentary by Bill Gross, Managing Director at PIMCO. Gross is perhaps the most high-profiled bond investor in America and often appears as a special guest on financial news programs. Gross typically does not rock the boat when he is on television, so it was a complete shock today to discover that Gross wrote a commentary on PIMCO’s website that would probably get him banned from television if he dare repeat some of the items he wrote in his commentary live on television. Gross’s full commentary can be read here: Link

I actually had a complete article written about Gross’s commentary but I came to the conclusion moments before publishing the article that quoting from Gross’s commentary may not be the wisest thing to do.... However, the writers at ZeroHedge have decided to quote and highlight key points of Gross’s commentary so I’ll refer you to their website for an in-depth analysis of Gross’s comments. You can read their analysis of Gross’s comments at the following Link

Why Barack Obama Overcompensates When He is Questioned on the Issue of Religion

A few weeks ago a poll found that many Americans were unsure about Barack Obama’s religious beliefs. Coincidentally, Barack Obama suddenly began talking openly about his religious beliefs to the point that some media outlets reported about his sudden openness. Some believe, including me, suspect that Obama’s sudden openness was a direct reaction to the poll…

Last week there were news reports about Obama’s strange omission of the word “Creator” when he recited the Declaration of Independence at multiple speaking engagements. Since the criticism Obama has made sure that he’s mentioned the word “Creator” when he recites the Declaration of Independence. The sudden use of the word “Creator” has not gone unnoticed. One of the most read stories today is about how Obama is suddenly using the term “Creator” in his speeches.

Obama’s sudden openness about his religious beliefs after a poll showed that many Americans’ were uncertain about them and his sudden usage of the word “Creator” after being criticized for not using it suggests that Obama is very sensitive when it comes to religious issues. Obama’s sudden change in behavior after being questioned on religious issues twice in four weeks illustrates that Obama tends to overcompensate when he is questioned on religious issues. In this blog post I answer why Obama overcompensates when he is questioned on religious issues.

The main reason why Obama tends to overcompensate when he is questioned on religious issues is that he is very vulnerable on this issue. Obama is vulnerable because there is a large group of people who are skeptical about his overall values and beliefs, especially religious values and beliefs. Skeptics point to Obama’s upbringing and/or his attendance of a radical church for two decades as reasons to question whether Obama’s beliefs are aligned with ordinary Americans. In addition, Obama’s stance on certain social policy issues and instances like last week’s omission of the word “Creator” when reciting the Declaration of Independence give people more reasons to question him…

It is important for Obama to give people the perception that his religious beliefs are aligned with ordinary Americans’ religious beliefs because the issue of religion is a key proxy issue (or one key way) where Obama can show that his values are aligned with ordinary Americans’ values. Obama does not have many other issues where he can do this because his economic and political beliefs are not aligned with the beliefs of ordinary Americans.[1]

  • Obama must cultivate the perception that his values are aligned with ordinary Americans’ values because some of Obama’s (remaining) appeal with relatively uninformed people (like young people) is based on the perception that he is “hip”. If Obama proves to everyone (young and old) that his values are not aligned with ordinary Americans’ values much of his remaining appeal and support would evaporate. Obama would no longer be hip-he would be someone who might as well be a foreigner. Without this appeal and support, Obama would instantly become a lame duck president.

Thus, Obama must address questions about his religious beliefs swiftly and forcibly because he risks losing his appeal and support with his remaining supporters if he allows those questions to go unanswered for an extended period of time.

To make myself clear, I am not trying to criticize Obama on his religious beliefs. I am just attempting to explain why Obama reacts suddenly when he is questioned on religious issues as he was four weeks ago and last week.

Note

[1] I would characterize Obama’s economic and political beliefs as being consistent with what you would expect from left-wing European politician.

Anarchists Then and Now

This is a guest post by Dr. Steve Gallop. Steve sends his thoughts to a group of online friends via email, one of whom sends them on to me.  His observations are  trenchant and articulate and often quite original.  Today I offer you his excellent comparison of the Tea Party to Sixties Hippies and Anarchists of old.  It's a fascinating read.
The Tea Party phenomenon has captured the attention of Americans across the political spectrum. The thing I find most intriguing is their demands resemble what in the past was often reviled as those of angry, anti-American anarchists. Today’s Tea Partiers/Libertarians seem far more threatening in demeanor, rhetoric and signage.

The long-haired hippie liberals who protested policies of the Federal Government in the Sixties and Seventies were mocked, denigrated, infiltrated by the FBI, beaten by police, shot and killed by National Guardsmen and told to “love it or leave it” by those who saw themselves as patriots. The protesters were denounced as anarchists who hated America. In general they (we) did not want to abolish the government, only certain policies like government-sanctioned discrimination based on race and gender and the increasingly disastrous Vietnam War.

Many of today’s protesters more closely resemble the most radical element of the Sixties protest movement except previously that element was a tiny minority of the movement whereas today they ARE the movement, including one senate candidate warning of “Second Amendment remedies” if elections don’t turn out as hoped.

Tea Partiers aren’t the first to rail against their own government, but they are very visible and well-armed. Tea Partiers sound like anarchists when they talk about government, yet they have massive corporate backing. The movement was all but created by lobbyist Dick Armey. The movement and now its candidates are heavily funded by, among other heavy hitters domestic and foreign, the Koch brothers whose Koch Industries ironically benefits tremendously from federal subsidies. Tea Partiers also have their own cable network in Fox where their events are publicized free of charge and their candidates can solicit contributions free of charge.

Many Tea Partiers spent last summer shouting down elected officials and making a show of carrying firearms in public. What makes the Tea Party’s anti-government rhetoric more palatable than the anti-government rhetoric of the Sixties? Does America prefer right-wing anarchists to the left-wing variety?

The so-called anarchists of the past fought to protect the people from the depredations of corporations, while today’s anarchists are not only corporate-sponsored, they are trying to protect corporations from the people. Maybe that is why the Tea Party candidates avoid any microphone not bearing the Fox logo. Patriots like Abbie Hoffman never shied away from the press because they believed in the positions they espoused. The old malcontents wanted to move forward, away from discrimination, unjust war and corporate greed dominating our society; the new anarchists want to return to a past where states’ rights ruled the day and Robber Barons ran free.

The Sixties malcontents were mostly young people. They saw what they believed to be injustices in the world they were just beginning to understand and wanting to improve the life that lay mostly ahead of them. Today’s complainers are mostly older people who clearly enjoyed the Vietnam War and racial segregation. Perhaps nobody is urging them to “love it or leave it” because they were the ones previously urging others to do so.

Tea Partiers have a new twist to how democracy works. They are not in favor of a majority being free to carry out its agenda if they disagree with it. Tea Partiers who call themselves patriots – to the exclusion of any with whom they disagree – are apparently the only ones worthy of being free to carry out their agenda, whether or not they are in the majority. The Tea Party already acts like the big government they bemoan. How can we elect to office people who despise government?

There were strong arguments and feelings both for and against independence while the Colonies debated separation from England. Loyalists wanted to remain loyal and subservient to The Crown, preferring the comforting protection of the familiar super-power whose colonists they were. The Patriots believed the comforting protection had become oppressive tyranny. They also wanted freedom from bullying at the hands of any particular religion or of multi-national corporations, particularly the East India Company whose tea ended up in Boston Harbor.

Tea Partiers wail about deficits and bloated, oppressive federal government. Let’s at least be factually accurate about big government in America. The Bush/Cheney administration increased the powers of the Executive Branch more than anyone since Richard Nixon. Some of the biggest bloating of the federal government and the largest federal deficits came at the hands of Ronald Reagan (who presided over the largest tax increase in American history) and George W. Bush. I know this is not what most people believe; look it up for yourself.

Our nation’s founders did great and terrible things. They fought the Revolution, wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, created a nation unlike any other and raised and nurtured it from a seedling. They owned slaves; they fathered children with some of them. They oversaw the slaughter of the Original Inhabitants as they simultaneously learned from them, incorporating their ideas of governance into their own thinking. Nobody’s perfect yet our system is a beacon to many across the globe.

There was great division even among those who would become known as the Founding Fathers. Adams believed in a strong government with long-lasting implications regarding future behavior. Jefferson believed it was wrong to shackle subsequent generations with inflexible rules and laws enacted before the living were even born. Jefferson held that one generation had no more right to impose its beliefs on future generations than one independent nation had to command another. The contrasts are exquisite if not irreconcilable on some level, yet they managed a consensus and founded a new nation.

This nation was founded on the right to disagree. We must somehow find a way to avoid so much all-or-none posturing on the issues of the day. We must learn better how to disagree while simultaneously respecting, accepting and truly understanding the sincerity and legitimacy of the other side. And if we are going to call the malcontents of one generation anarchists, we should be ready to do the same in another.

More on the One Year Day of the Lord Theory (With Charts)

In my last blog post concerning the length of the Day of the Lord I discussed the possibility that the Day of the Lord could last for a single day, one year, or potentially both. I argued that Isaiah 34:8 was compelling evidence to argue that the Day of the Lord will last one year and suggested that the reason why the Day of the Lord is referred to as a “day” is that it's a special prophetic day in the same manner that a prophetic week is seven years long.

  • There are seven days in a week, so one “day” in a prophetic week (seven years) is one year in length.

In this blog post I seek to provide more clarification about the Day of the Lord theory I currently support and discuss some of the implications associated with this theory.

Clarifying the Timing of the Day of the Lord

First, I want to provide a graphic illustration that summarizes the timeline that I believe the Day of the Lord will occur in context of the End Times. Figure 1 illustrates the proposed timeline I have:

Figure 1: Proposed Day of the Lord Timeline (Link)

Previous Argument

  • An explanation of why the Great Tribulation lasts from the midpoint of the seventieth week of Daniel to the 6th seal and why the Day of the Lord begins following the opening of the 6th seal is available: Here
  • An explanation of why the Day of the Lord ends with the pouring of the seventh plague mentioned in Revelation 15:1 and Revelation 16 is available: Here
  • A review of the seventieth week of Daniel timeline is available in the appendix of this article.

Some people are tempted to place the start of the Day of the Lord at the beginning of the seventh year of the seventieth week of Daniel. In effect, this placement causes the Day of the Lord to coincide with the entire seventh year of the seventieth week of Daniel. Figure 2 is a chart illustrating the placement of the Day of the Lord under this interpretation

Figure 2: Proposed Day of the Lord Timeline if it coincides with the Final Year of Daniel’s 70th Week (Link)

timeline error

The logic some people use to argue why the Day of the Lord will coincide with the final year of the seventieth week of Daniel is the following: “One day in the prophetic week is one year long, so it makes sense to have the Day of the Lord to represent one day in the prophetic week-the final day”. In addition, some people argue for this particular placement because they believe the seventh year of the seventieth week of Daniel holds a special numerical significance and/or they believe the end of the seventieth week marks the end of God’s wrath.

As intuitive as the above idea is, I do not believe the seventh year of the seventieth week of Daniel coincides completely with the Day of the Lord. The reason for this is that I believe the Bible suggests that there will be an additional thirty days after the end of the seventieth week of Daniel where the Lord will inflict his final plagues on Antichrist and defeat Antichrist and his forces at the Battle of Armageddon. The following is why I believe there is an additional thirty days between the end of the seventieth week of Daniel and the Battle of Armageddon.

The Basis for 30 Extra Days between the End of the 70th Week of Daniel & Armageddon

Daniel 9:27 tells us that the Antichrist will stop regular sacrifice in the Third Temple in Jerusalem at the midpoint of the seventieth week of Daniel.

  • Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

(Christ suggested that this is the time when the abomination that causes desolation is established-Matthew 24:15)

Daniel 9:27 also tells us that the abomination of desolation that Antichrist will establish shall remain “until the consummation [destruction], and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate”. In other words, the abomination of desolation will remain in place until the time when the desolater (Antichrist) is destroyed.

Daniel 12:11 tells us the abomination that causes desolation will remain in place for 1,290 days (some even argue that the abomination is the Antichrist himself-demanding the world's worship). The midway point to the end of the seventieth week is 1,260 days so the Antichrist has another thirty days beyond the seventieth week on Earth.

  • Dan 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

2 Thessalonians 2:8 tells us the consummation of Antichrist will come when Christ uses “the spirit of His mouth”:

  • 2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.[1]

The event when Christ defeats Antichrist and his forces with His mouth is at the Battle of Armageddon:

  • Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
  • Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
  • Rev 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
  • Rev 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
  • Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

  • Rev 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
  • Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
  • Rev 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

Therefore, the Battle of Armageddon must take place thirty days following the seventieth week of Daniel to remain consistent with the detail that the abomination of desolation remains in place for 1,290 days, the amount of time that it takes from its establishment until the desolator (Antichrist) is consumed.

The plagues that punish the armies at the Battle of Armageddon are associated with the final (seventh) plague of God’s wrath, which you recall signifies/completes the end of the Day of the Lord (Revelation 15:1 and Revelation 16:17).

  • Rev 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
  • Rev 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.
  • Rev 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
  • Rev 16:20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
  • Rev 16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

  • Eze 38:22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
  • Eze 38:23 Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.

The Importance of Finding the Day of the Lord’s End

As a result, we can mark the end of the Day of the Lord thirty days following the end of the seventieth week of Daniel. The importance of finding the end of the Day of the Lord is that we can subtract one year (360 days) from its end to find its approximate start. Here is some of the arithmetic (partially summarized by Figure 3):

  • The end of the seventieth week of Daniel is 330 days into the Day of the Lord.
  • The start of the Day of the Lord takes place approximately 2190 days, 6 years and 1 month, or 37 months into the seventieth week of Daniel (2520 – 330 = 2190).

New Argument 2

Implications of a One Year Day of the Lord

There are some major implications if the Day of the Lord is only one year long and ends thirty days following the end of the seventieth week of Daniel:

1. The Great Tribulation can last no longer than 930 days, 2 years and 7 months, or 31 months because 330 of the 1260 days in the second half of the seventieth week of Daniel are associated with the Day of the Lord (illustrated in Figure 4).

Figure 4: Proposed Day of the Lord Timeline in Detail (Link)

New Argument 3

2. The events during the Day of the Lord-the seventh seal, the sounding of all seven trumpets and the pouring of the seven (vials/bowls) plagues-must take place very quickly. This is actually very feasible because some events potentially will be the catalyst for other events.

  • For instance, the impact of Wormwood crashing into a body of water on Earth (third trumpet) could launch so much particulate matter into the atmosphere that the skies can be partially darkened for a significant period of time (fourth trumpet).

3. Similarly, many events must take place in a short amount of time when you take the fact that the conditions associated with the fifth trumpet (Part 1, Part 2) will last for five months long (150 days) into account. There will only be 210 days for the sounding of the other six trumpets and pouring of the seven plagues.

4. The few people who believe in the Pre-Wrath Rapture could theoretically approximate the timing of the Rapture by looking at when the 6th seal is opened. The problem though is that a person would have to find the correct year when the End Times begins in order to do this, and still this may not be enough because not even Christ knew when the Rapture would take place (Matthew 24:36).

Again, I agree with those who believe the Day of the Lord is going to last for one year at this moment. Isaiah 34:8’s statement that the Day of the Lord is “a year of recompences for the controversy of Zion” is difficult to account for unless one views the Day of the Lord as a one year time period. However, this is a preliminary finding so it’s subject to change if someone is able to disprove it or if I find a way to disprove it. Feel free to disprove it if you can. The same applies to the implications of this study. If you can find a way to disprove them feel free to do so.

The Length of the 70th Week of Daniel and Prophetic Years

Gabriel told Daniel that 70 weeks have been given to the people of Israel and the city of Jerusalem to end their disobedience, atone for their sins, and to be saved.

  • Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
  • Dan 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
  • Dan 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Most Christians who study Bible prophecy agree that the first 69 weeks of this prophecy was fulfilled over a several-hundred year period with a call to rebuild Jerusalem in the 20th year of Artaxerxes Longimanus’s reign (Nehemiah Ch. 2:1-5) and the death and ascension of Christ. Therefore, Gabriel did not mean 70 literal weeks where each week is 7 days in length. The Hebrew translation of the word “week” in Daniel is shâbûa‛, which actually means “seven”. Therefore we can also refer to Daniel’s prophecy as “the 70 sevens”. The length of a prophetic week can be determined by analyzing the structure of the 70th week of Daniel. Daniel’s 70th week is divided into two halves. In the first half Antichrist will make and keep a covenant with Israel, but will break it halfway through the seven.

  • Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

The 2nd half of the week is a period of severe persecution. This period of time will last for “time, times, and a half”. The Hebrew word for “time” is “mô‛êd”, which also can mean “a year”. Nearly every commentator who analyzes Daniel’s 70 week prophecy agrees that “time, times, and a half” means 3 ½ years. Therefore, a prophetic week is a seven year period.

  • Dan 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

In Revelation 12:14 we learn that 3 ½ prophetic years is the equivalent of 1260 days. If we divide 1260 days by 3 ½ years we will find that a prophetic year is 360 days long.

  • Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

  • Rev 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Similarly, 3 ½ years is also defined as 42 months since seven years is the equivalent to 84 months. Therefore a prophetic month is 30 days long since 1260 days divided by 42 months equals 30 days/month.

  • Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
  • Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Given this information, we can confirm that the 70th Week of Daniel will be 2520 days long three different.

  1. 30 Days (in a Prophetic Month) x 42 Prophetic Months (in Half a Prophetic Week) x 2 Halves = 2520 Days
  2. 7 Prophetic Years (in a Prophetic Week) x 360 Days (in a Prophetic Year) = 2520 Days
  3. 1260 Days in “Time, Times, and Half” x 2 Halves = 2520 Days.

Week-End Video to Make You Laugh

With a tip of the hat to Gilbert & Sullivan and another to  Cogitamus, the fabulous blog where I found this delightful satirical goodie, I give you the laugh you need  if you are beset by electioneering from both left and right, sick of the tea party, and just about ready to throw in the towel.  Tah-dah  !!!

Don't Stay Home. Get Out and Vote

Listen up my fellow Americans. Did you know that historically, only  four out of ten registered voters vote in mid-term elections ?  It's true, and this year since lots of people are disappointed, the figures are set to look even worse.

The young voters who made such a difference in 2008 don't seem to be engaged in 2010.  The left is feeling let down and disgusted by an administration that has not, in their view, gone far enough. .Independents are frustrated and angry at the ongoing partisan wrangling and gridlock in Washington, and the rest of us are sick of the mud slinging and media hype.Times are tough, jobs are scarce and  people are scared and cranky.

In contrast to this deflated feeling, the extreme right is riding high, energized by the billions poured into the tea party movement by conservative moneyed interests for their own reasons and the media hype being used to manipulate the masses. Frightened people are buying the crap that is being handed out and think winning back the Congress for the Republican Party( that's the party of NO) will change things.  It won't, but they don't know that and I, for one, hope they never find out.

The bottom line is that people don't think things are getting better-- but here's the thing.  The Obama Administration actually averted the worse financial disaster since the Great Depression and things are getting better-- just not very fast.  It's hard to campaign on the fact that things would have been worse if they had not been in power, but it's true.

Do you really want to let the folks who got us into this mess get back in the saddle by becoming the majority in Congress?  Do you really want big corporations and lobbyists to have even MORE power than they do? Do you really want insurance companies to be able to continue to raise your healthcare premiums while denying you healthcare? If your answer is NO--then you have a moral obligation to let your voice be heard through your vote.

This year in 32 states you don't even have to wait for election day.  You can take advantage of early voting and do it at your convenience.  There are senatorial races, congressional races and important gubinitorial races that are really really important.

Your vote is needed.  So no matter how disappointed you feel, or how busy you are, don't stay home.  Get out and vote.

Understanding the Enemy: The Difference between Fallen Angels and Demons

I’m having some major issues with my laptop’s screen that has really slowed me down. I’m in the process of finding a new laptop so I have had less time to write unfortunately. Nevertheless, I managed to find enough time over the past couple of days to put something together before the weekend.

I sometimes throw around the terms “fallen angel” and “demon” without actually defining what the difference is between them (as I did a few days ago with my post about an Alien/UFO interview). Some people believe there is no difference between the two terms and thus use the terms interchangeably. I believe fallen angels and demons are different spiritual entities and I’ll show you why I feel this way in this blog post.

Fallen Angel

I define a fallen angel as a spiritual being created by God which fell out of Heaven into a sinful/corrupted state. Revelation 12 records the first batch of fallen angels who fell from Heaven.

  • Rev 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
  • Rev 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Fallen angels In the Bible are often referred to as the “sons of God” and as Satan’s ministers. The following is a short list of the capabilities of fallen angels:

Physical Visibility: Although fallen angels are spiritual beings, they appear to have the ability to physically appear to people (like their un-fallen counterparts in Genesis 19:1). Genesis 6 records the activities of the first batch of fallen angels that fell from Heaven. The sons of God (fallen angels) were able to marry human women (which strongly suggests the women were able to see them) and produced children (which further suggests that fallen angels were able to appear physically to women).

  • Gen 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
  • Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

  • Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Extraterrestrial Travel: Fallen Angels apparently can travel out of this world. For instance, Satan and his fallen angels one day came to present themselves in front of God in Heaven.

  • Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Physical Transformation and the Ability to Deceive: 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 informs us that Satan’s ministers/fallen angels have the ability to transform themselves so that they can pose as ministers of righteousness.

  • 2Co 11:13 For such ones are false apostles, deceitful workers transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
  • 2Co 11:14 And did not Satan marvelously transform himself into an angel of light?
  • 2Co 11:15 It is not a great thing, then, if also his ministers transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

As I’ve stated before, the Greek word for “transform” is metaschēmatizō, which means to “transform the figure of”. Therefore, fallen angels have the ability to deceive people by transforming themselves to resemble religious figures that many people believe in if they choose to do that (which they sometimes actually do).

For more on fallen angels, you can read my detailed analysis of Ephesians 6:12 at the following link.

Demon/Devil

I define a demon as an unclean spirit that seeks to possess, manipulate, and to deceive people. In the King James Version of the Bible demons are referred to as “devils”. Here are the abilities of demons...

The Ability to Control the Entity they Possess: A well-known event where Christ casted out demons from a man to a herd of swine suggest demons can control the entity they possess. The demons controlled the man’s actions and then the actions of the herd of swine.

  • Mat 8:28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
  • Mat 8:29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
  • Mat 8:30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
  • Mat 8:31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
  • Mat 8:32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

  • Mar 5:11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.
  • Mar 5:12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
  • Mar 5:13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

Ability to Inflict Harm on their Victim(s): Matthew 4:23-25 and Luke 4:40-41 suggest that demons have the power to inflict mental illness and physical diseases on their victims.

  • Mat 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
  • Mat 4:24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
  • Mat 4:25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.

  • Luk 4:40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
  • Luk 4:41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

(On a side note, I think it’s quite possible that some of today’s “miraculous healings” are engineered by the spiritual forces of evil to build up the reputations of some “healers” who provide or have the potential to provide false teachings to people and to condition people to believe in lying signs and wonders. For instance, I cited a woman who was supposedly given the power to “heal” after meeting an evil entity. The woman claimed she would be told which people were ill, what illnesses were inflicting them, and with a few words the illnesses would suddenly disappear…)

Unusual Physical Strength: The episode when Christ casted out demons into swine also suggests that demons can give an individual they possess unusual strength:

  • Mar 5:1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
  • Mar 5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
  • Mar 5:3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
  • Mar 5:4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
  • Mar 5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

Limited Physical Movement: The Book of Revelation gives us a clue about the limitations that demons have. Revelation 9:20 tells us that people “of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk” even after being punished by plagues.

  • Rev 9:18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
  • Rev 9:19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.
  • Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
  • Rev 9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

The question that some people wonder is: “Why would men be worshiping devils if they are supposed to worship Antichrist, his image, and his idols?” The theory which I think best addresses this issue is that the demons/devils actually will inhabit the images and idols of Antichrist. After all, Revelation 13:15 suggest that there is some form of “life” in the image of the beast.

  • Rev 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
  • Rev 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

By worshiping an image or idol of the Antichrist, people will also be worshiping the demon inhabiting the object.

The demon inside the image (or idol of the beast) will be greatly limited by the entity they will inhabit. They will only be able to communicate. They will be unable to see, hear, or walk. Nevertheless, the images will have the ability to kill those do not worship the image of the beast.

  • I suspect the demon in each image or idol will help the forces of evil track the whereabouts of people with the Mark of the Beast and people without the Mark of the Beast. A demon will not have the physical capacity to kill a non-Mark wearer themselves since they will be confined to the item they inhabit. However, the demon entrapped in an idol or image can facilitate a person’s death with their ability to alert someone who does have that capacity. Perhaps the demon will have the ability to sense who and who does not have the Mark...

The Ability to Deceive: Revelation 16 and 1 Timothy chapter 4 suggest that demons have the ability to deceive people with false beliefs.

  • Rev 16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
  • Rev 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

(it’s unclear how the demons will resemble frogs so it’s unclear if they will actually appear in physical form as frogs to the kings of the earth).

  • 1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
  • 1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
  • 1Ti 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
  • 1Ti 4:4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

(it is possible that the teachings of devils could be provided to people by religious/spiritual teachers who were possessed by devils)

An Alternative Explanation

Some people cite the unbiblical Book of Enoch to understand who demons are. The idea suggested in Enoch is that demons are the disembodied spirit of the Nephilim (giants) that perished in the great flood of Genesis.

  • Enoch 15:8 And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon
  • Enoch 15:9 the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin;
  • Enoch 15:10 they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. [As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.]
  • Enoch 15:11 And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless
  • Enoch 15:12 hunger and thirst, and cause offences. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them.

It’s possible that demons could be the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim, but without biblical evidence it’s impossible and unwise to treat this idea as a fact.

My Overall View on Fallen Angels vs. Demons

Overall, fallen angels and demons have some similarities. Both are evil entities that work to deceive people. I acknowledge that it’s quite possible that fallen angels and demons have even more similarities than what I recognize here. The main difference I see is that fallen angels appear to have more freedom of movement than demons do. Fallen angels do not seem reliant on having to possess something to get a task done. A fallen angel can physically transform and make themselves visible if they want to deceive a person. Meanwhile, a demon seems to have the need to possess a physical body in order to achieve a task.

Relating All of this to Aliens/UFOs

Since demons have some limitations in their movement and fallen angels appear to not have such limitations it’s far more likely that aliens are low-level fallen angels than demons. However, this may be semantics more than anything because both fallen angels and demons are formidable foes for the ordinary person. Nevertheless, if you encounter a demon or an alien/fallen angel, you can scare them away by using Christ’s name.

Real Lies

An online friend forwarded this to me today. I just love it.  What a pithy comment on the way people are feeling all over the world....... And, of course it is clever too , which doesn't hurt.

..

Is the Day of the Lord a Single Day, A Year, or Both? (Please Have an Open Mind)

Over the past several days I’ve evaluated several arguments concerning the length of the Day of the Lord. I provided evidence that the Day of the Lord is likely going to begin following the opening of the sixth seal and is likely going to end after the pouring of the final seven plagues referenced in Revelation 15 and Revelation 16. In addition, I’ve shown why it is unlikely that the Day of the Lord is going to last for seven years, why it is unlikely going to last for one thousand years, and discussed what the Bible likely means when it says the Day of the Lord shall come as a “thief in the night”. Today I evaluate whether the Day of the Lord can be a single day, a year, or perhaps both.

Is the Day of the Lord One Year?

Isaiah 34 is one of the most descriptive chapters in the Bible about the wide-scale slaughter of the nations during the Day of the Lord. The first seven verses of the chapter describe a world similar to the one described in Revelation 6:13-14 following the opening of the sixth seal: Verse 8 is the first time in the chapter where the Day of the Lord is mentioned. The verse provides a very interesting detail regarding the Day of the Lord: it is “the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion”.[1]

  • Rev 6:12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
  • Rev 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
Rev 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

  • Isa 34:1 Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.
  • Isa 34:2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.
  • Isa 34:3 Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
  • Isa 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
  • Isa 34:5 For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment.
  • Isa 34:6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea.
  • Isa 34:7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.
  • Isa 34:8 For it is the day of the LORD'S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.

Verse 8 implies that the Lord will spend a year repaying his enemies for Zion’s sake. The repayment in this context is not good for those who will receive the repayment. For instance, the Lord mentions that Tyre, Zidon, and “all the coast of Palestine” will be treated as harshly as they treated those in Judah:

  • Joe 3:4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;
  • Joe 3:5 Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:
  • Joe 3:6 The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.
  • Joe 3:7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:
  • Joe 3:8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

Similarly, the song of Moses, a song that will be sung during the End Times (Revelation 15:3) includes a passage where the Lord mentions that He will “render vengeance” to his enemies and “will reward them” (recompense) those that hate him.

  • Deu 32:36 For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.
  • Deu 32:37 And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,
  • Deu 32:38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.
  • Deu 32:39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.
  • Deu 32:40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.
  • Deu 32:41 If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.
  • Deu 32:42 I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.
  • Deu 32:43 Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.

Moreover, Isaiah 59:17-18 further links the time when the Lord will enact His vengeance (the Day of the Lord’s vengeance) with the time when He recompences His enemies:

  • Isa 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
  • Isa 59:18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.

This detail about the Day of the Lord being “the year of the recompences for the controversy of Zion” stands out from a chapter like Zephaniah 1 which mentions the Day of the Lord as “a day” numerous times.

  • Zep 1:14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.
  • Zep 1:15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
  • Zep 1:16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

Is the Day of the Lord a 24 Hour Day?

I do not believe the Day of the Lord is a 24 hour period of time as I’ve described why the Day of the Lord appears to begin following the opening of the sixth seal and appears to end with the pouring of the last of the seven plagues (the seventh vial/bowl judgment in Revelation 16).

  • The fifth trumpet is a five-month event that takes place after the opening of the sixth seal and before the pouring of the seventh vial/bowl judgment (Revelation 9:10). This alone seems to refute the notion that the Day of the Lord is limited to a 24 hour period of time.

However, it seems odd for the Bible to label the time of God’s wrath as the “Day of the Lord’ when it does not appear to be “one day” long.

Harmonizing the Details

The concept of time is sometimes different in Bible prophecy. For instance, the Bible describes a future time period as “one week” (the seventieth week of Daniel):

  • Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

There’s not a lot of debate about how long the seventieth week of Daniel lasts because most people assume it is seven “prophetic years” long (2520 Days: 360 days in a prophetic year x 7 Years…see the appendix of this blog post for a complete explanation of how these numbers were derived). Given that the seventieth week of Daniel is seven prophetic years long, if we took the prophetic week and divided by the number of days in a week (seven) we would find that a “prophetic day” associated with the seventieth week of Daniel is one year long (360 days).

The concept of a prophetic day in relation to a prophetic week perhaps best harmonizes Isaiah 34:8 with the “day” part of the term “Day of the Lord”. The “Day of the Lord” is a special prophetic day which lasts one year long; in the same manner that a prophetic week is seven years long. Thus, the Day of the Lord is “one day” long, but it’s not an ordinary 24 hour long day.

  • There is biblical precedent for a day to represent a year in Numbers 14:34 and Ezekiel 4:4-6.

At this moment I agree with those who believe the Day of the Lord is going to last for one year. Isaiah 34:8’s statement that the Day of the Lord is “the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion” is difficult to account for unless one views the Day of the Lord as a one year time period. However, this is a preliminary finding so it’s subject to change if someone is able to disprove it or if I find a way to disprove it. Feel free to disprove it if you can.

In the next blog post concerning the Day of the Lord I’ll probably provide more clarification about the one year Day of the Lord theory and may discuss the implications associated with the Day of the Lord potentially lasting for one year.

Notes/Appendix

[1] Some people also cite Isaiah 61:1-3 and Isaiah 63:1-4 as verses which suggest the Day of the Lord is one year long. I’m not so sure the one year time period mentioned in these verses are intended to describe the length of the Day of the Lord. The language used in Isaiah 61:1-3 and Isaiah 63:1-4 suggest that the “year” referenced in these verses is a Jubilee Year rather than a year of vengeance like Isaiah 34:8 references. However, I believe the beginning of the Jubilee Year will take place during the Day of the Lord. For more, click this link

Given this information, we can confirm that the 70th Week of Daniel will be 2520 days long three different ways.

  1. 30 Days (in a Prophetic Month) x 42 Prophetic Months (in Half a Prophetic Week) x 2 Halves = 2520 Days
  2. 7 Prophetic Years (in a Prophetic Week) x 360 Days (in a Prophetic Year) = 2520 Days
  3. 1260 Days in “Time, Times, and Half” x 2 Halves = 2520 Days.
