Could the European Sovereign Debt Crisis Lead to the Disintegration of Europe?

I’ve periodically mentioned that the current European sovereign debt crisis could be a catalyst that brings fiscal and eventually political union in Europe, a key development that probably needs to take place if the European Union is going to emerge as a significant End Times player. The reason that the European sovereign debt crisis could be a catalyst to bring Europe more together is that the E.U. and the Euro’s survival depends on the close coordination of countries throughout Europe.

  • This assessment is shared by Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Council, who recently stated: “We all have to work together in order to survive with the eurozone, because if we don’t survive with the eurozone we will not survive with the European Union”.

I’ve been monitoring the news for any signs that increased fiscal or political union is on the horizon in Europe. There have been a few developments in recent months including a proposal to create an E.U. Treasury, which would be a major step towards fiscal union. However, more recently I’ve heard some experts talk more about the possibility of the E.U. disintegrating as a result of current the European sovereign debt crisis.

  • For instance, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, international business editor for the Daily Telegraph recently commented that he saw real potential for the rich countries of northern Europe to leave the E.U. if they become tired of bailing out debt-ridden southern Europe AND the potential for southern European countries to leave the E.U. so they can regain the right to print money (they don’t have the ability to print money on their own under the current E.U. arrangement).

Today I’ll share my thoughts about the possibility of the European Union breaking up as a consequence of the ongoing sovereign debt crisis in Europe.

I view the complete breakup of the E.U. as an event that is less likely to happen than for the E.U. to achieve fiscal and political union because I see biblical evidence for Europe to be united in some form during the End Times and it appears European leaders, elites, and the spiritual forces of evil are determined to keep Europe together by any means necessary.

I believe that the nation of Gomer mentioned in Ezekiel 38 as an ally of Gog is represented by a collection of countries that currently comprise several European countries.

  • Eze 38:2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
  • Eze 38:3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
  • Eze 38:4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
  • Eze 38:6 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.

Here is what I wrote about Gomer specifically back in April:

I want to focus on Gomer, the eldest son of Japheth (mentioned in Genesis 10 as one of Noah’s sons). Jewish historian Flavius Josephus linked Gomer with the Galatians, who were also known as Gaul. Julius Caesar noted three divisions of Gaul: the Belgae, the Aquitani, and the Galli (Celtae).[1] These particular three tribes spread throughout Western Europe encompassing the countries of Great Britain, France, Italy, and the Benelux. However, these were not all of the divisions of Gaul as other tribes moved into Central Europe. This suggests that Gomer is represented today by the European Union.

The creation of a pan-European superstate is a goal that elites, European leaders, and the spiritual forces of evil have been working on to achieve since the end of World War 2.

  • I know elites and European leaders have been trying to unite Europe since the end of World War 2 because I was required to read many letters and documents by the founders and architects of the E.U. for a Political Science course I took about the European Union. I read how European leaders and elites conveyed a dream of eventually creating a pan-European superstate and debated with each other about the best way to achieve this goal. Elites and European leaders have worked for over sixty years to build the European Union up to this point. I imagine the current set of elites and European leaders will not let sixty years of work go to waste without a big fight to save the dream.
  • Christian author Constance Cumbey noted in her landmark book The Hidden Dangers of the Rainbow that Foster Bailey, the husband of New Age author Alice Bailey, once wrote “that one of the goals of their so-called Hierarchy [Satan’s spiritual hierarchy] was to have a unified Europe” and that a second “attempt is in full swing” (the first attempt was led by Adolf Hitler in World War 2).[2] If the spiritual forces of evil's goal is to have a united Europe then they would probably prefer to keep Europe together in face of this crisis.

Although there is good reason to believe that Europe is going to be united in some form during the End Times, I am not so sure whether it is biblically impossible for the European Union to experience at least a partial breakup (by partial breakup I mean that the European Union loses some members). One reason is that there may be biblical evidence in Daniel 7 and Isaiah 66 that Greece is its own kingdom during the End Times. If Greece is its own kingdom then it would unlikely remain a member of the E.U. Another reason that I do not yet feel comfortable saying it is biblically impossible for the E.U. to experience at least a partial breakup is that I could envision a scenario where the Antichrist challenges Europe when he is at war building his empire. Daniel 11:36-39 suggests that the Antichrist will fight against the most formidable opponents and win:

  • Dan 11:36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
  • Dan 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.
  • Dan 11:38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
  • Dan 11:39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

If Antichrist emerges from Russia (as I believe he will) he could try to unite a fractured Europe himself (On the other hand, I could easily envision the Antichrist overwhelming a united European Union if it remains intact).

It’s difficult to forecast what is going to happen in Europe over the next several days, weeks, and months. Experts’ opinion about the fate of the Euro and the E.U. varies widely. The E.U. is more likely to remain intact than it is to completely breakup in my eyes for the reasons I cited above. In addition:

  • I expect some money printing by the European Central Bank at some point to provide the E.U. more funding for bailouts and to provide some relief for debt-ridden European countries.
  • I expect elites and European leaders to eventually propose fiscal union as a way to stem the crisis and potentially avoid future ones, a step that Ambrose Evans-Pritchard described yesterday as a “game-changer” that could save the Euro and the E.U. and a step that the chief economics commentator at the Financial Times wrote is needed.

Overall, the European sovereign debt crisis has the potential to bring change to Europe so that it is closer to being ready for the start of the End Times, especially if the outcome is fiscal union and political union.
